It marked the Cubs first post-season appearance since winning the NL pennant in 1945 while it was the first post-season appearance for the Padres in franchise history. In the best of five contest, the Cubs would take a 2-0 lead but could not close the deal as the Friars would win the NL pennant.
History did not repeat itself as the Cubs eliminated the Padres in the third and deciding game of the NLWC winning 3-1 turning back a 9th rally by San Diego after Brad Keller plunked back-to-back batters.
The Cubs will now face their NL Central division rival Milwaukee Brewers in the NLDS. The series begins on Saturday in Milwaukee where Brewers fans will give Cubs manager (and ex-Brewers skipper) Craig Counsell a not-so-rousing welcome.
