Trump Continues to Play Weak Hand in Criticizing Biden Over 2009-2010 Swine Flu

Back in May, President Trump praised his handling of COVID-19 while criticizing Joe Biden's handling of the 2009-2010 H1N1 pandemic (a.k.a. Swine Flu). Trump tweeted:

We are getting great marks for the handling of the CoronaVirus pandemic, especially the very early BAN of people from China, the infectious source, entering the USA. Compare that to the Obama/Sleepy Joe disaster known as H1N1 Swine Flu. Poor marks, bad polls - didn’t have a clue!

Here's what I wrote in response: 

Perhaps Trump is getting great reviews from the Alex Joneses of the world or from his imaginary friends. His China travel ban applied only to foreign nationals and didn't stop the entry of 40,000 Americans and others authorized to enter the United States. Fat lot of good that did.

But since Trump insists we compare his response to COVID-19 to the Obama Administration's response to the H1N1 Swine Flu pandemic of 2009-2010, a response he considers a disaster, let us grant him his wish.

The H1N1 Swine Flu pandemic of 2009-2010 resulted in the deaths of 12,469 Americans.

As of this writing, the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in the deaths of 80,308 Americans (and counting).

Here is the key thing to remember when comparing H1N1 Swine Flu deaths and COVID-19 deaths in the United States. Those 12,469 deaths occurred within a year. These 80,308 deaths have occurred within three months. 

Let me put it another way. COVID-19 has killed nearly 7 times as many Americans as the H1N1 Swine Flu did and did so in a quarter of the time. 

President Trump was playing a weak hand. Most Presidents would have learned their lesson. But contrary to Susan Collins' wishful thinking, Donald Trump never learns his lesson. He keeps playing the same cards. This morning Trump tweeted:

Biden FAILED BADLY with the Swine Flu. It was the Gang That Couldn’t Shoot Straight”. He didn’t have a clue. We have done an incredible job with the much tougher China Virus!

When Trump slammed Biden over the Swine Flu in May, the United States had just passed 80,000 COVID-19 deaths. Today we are nearing 200,000 dead Americans. According to Johns Hopkins University, as of this writing, COVID-19 has claimed the lives of 198,306 Americans. 

But Trump wasn't done there. Just hours later he tweeted:

Sleepy Joe doesn’t have a clue, just look at what his own people said about his handling of the Swine Flu. It was a disaster!

Naturally Trump doesn't cite who among Biden's people were critical of his response. He's talking out of his ass. Only in TrumpWorld are the deaths of 12,000 people a disaster while the deaths of 200,000 people are a triumph.  

The question remains if the American voter will be able to see through Trump's weak hand and call his bluff at the ballot box.
