Chicago Cubs pitcher Alec Mills has become the second pitcher throw a no-hitter during the 2020 MLB season.
In only his 15th big league start, Mills did not allow a hit to the Milwaukee Brewers en route to a crushing 12-0 victory at Miller Park in Milwaukee. Mills' no-hitter comes less than three weeks after Lucas Giolito of the crosstown Chicago White Sox no-hit the Pittsburgh Pirates. This marks the first time a Cubs pitcher and a White Sox pitcher have thrown a no-hitter in the same season.
I don't think anyone would be surprised at Giolito tossing a no-hitter. Mills, however, is a far less likely candidate. Mills, 28, was a walk-on at the University of Tennessee at Martin and wasn't drafted until the 22nd round by the Kansas City Royals in 2012. After a cup of coffee with the Royals in 2016, Mills was traded to the Cubs prior to the 2017 season and would make 16 appearances with the Cubs between 2018 and 2019. This is Mills' first full season in the majors. The no-hitter was Mills' 6th big league victory.
Perhaps it is the beginning of great things to come. Today could also be the epoch of Mills' career. Whatever follows for him going forward it will be forever said that September 13, 2020 was not a run of the mills day for Alec Mills.
