The Atlanta Braves set a modern National League record on Wednesday night when they scored 29 runs against the Miami Marlins. The final score was 29-9.
Until tonight that record had been held by the 1929 St. Louis Cardinals who on July 6th of that year defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 28-6 in the second game of a doubleheader. The Cardinals had a 10 run inning in both the 1st and 5th inning of that game.
The Braves scored 11 runs in the second inning but by the middle of the 4th inning their lead had been cut down to 13-8 as Braves starter Tommy Milone only lasted 3.1 innings. But the Braves would score 3 runs in the 4th, 6 runs in the 5th, 3 runs in the 6th and 4 runs in the 7th whilst the Marlins only managed one more run.
The star of the game was Adam Duvall who hit 3 home runs and collected 9 RBI. Freddie Freeman and Ronald Acuna, Jr. also had big nights with 6 RBI and 5 RBI, respectively. Every single member of the Braves lineup had at least one hit during the game.
The Braves' 29 runs matches the output of the Boston Red Sox who defeated the St. Louis Browns 29-4 on June 8, 1950 (the day after defeating them 20-4) and Chicago White Sox who defeated the Kansas City Athletics 29-6 on April 23, 1955.
Atlanta fell one run shy of tying the modern MLB record for runs scored in a single. It was just over 13 years ago on August 22, 2007 when the Texas Rangers run ramshod over the Baltimore Orioles by a score of 30-3 to the horror of fans assembled at Camden Yards. The Rangers scored 16 of their 30 runs in the final two innings of that game.
It is worth noting the Rangers manager at the time was Ron Washington. The same Ron Washington is now the Braves' third base coach. As the late Mel Allen would have said, "How about that?"
