This afternoon an article written by Jeffrey Goldberg of The Atlantic revealed that President Trump didn't want to pay his respects to American veterans killed during WWI while visiting France during Veterans' Day Weekend in 2018 referring to our heroes as "losers" and "suckers":
When President Donald Trump canceled a visit to the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery near Paris in 2018, he blamed rain for the last-minute decision, saying that “the helicopter couldn’t fly” and that the Secret Service wouldn’t drive him there. Neither claim was true.
Trump rejected the idea of the visit because he feared his hair would become disheveled in the rain, and because he did not believe it important to honor American war dead, according to four people with firsthand knowledge of the discussion that day. In a conversation with senior staff members on the morning of the scheduled visit, Trump said, “Why should I go to that cemetery? It’s filled with losers.” In a separate conversation on the same trip, Trump referred to the more than 1,800 marines who lost their lives at Belleau Wood as “suckers” for getting killed.
That Trump would describe our WWI veterans this way isn't surprising given how he has disparaged John McCain's military service during his presidential campaign and even after the 2008 GOP presidential candidate was dead and buried. It isn't surprising given his treatment of the Khans, a Gold Star family during the 2016 campaign. At that time, I wrote that his treatment of the Khans represented the worst of America. Given how he has not seen fit to raise the issue of Russia putting bounties on the lives of American soldiers with Vladimir Putin, Trump has managed to go beneath the bottom of the barrel.
Now I'm sure before the evening is out, Trump will tweet "fake news". But given Trump's behavior who aside from his most ardent supporters would doubt the veracity of Goldberg's report?
Let me put it another way. If Trump views WWI veterans who died in service of this country as "losers" and "suckers" then what does that make the Kyle Rittenhouse, the Kenosha Killer?
The fact that I need to ask the question ought to tell you that Trump is unfit to be Commander in Chief of our Armed Forces.
UPDATE: True to form, Trump has called the story "fake news". In other words, he confirmed the story.
