It does not surprise me that Cindy McCain saw fit to endorse Joe Biden yesterday. After all, McCain appeared in a video which aired during the DNC last month in which she paid tribute to Biden's friendship with her late husband.
Nevertheless her public endorsement is significant. After all, the two men were on opposing presidential tickets a dozen years ago. Evidently, the recent revelations of President Trump referring to American soldiers killed in combat as "losers" and "suckers" proved to be a bridge too far and compelled her to go public with her support of Biden.
McCain's endorsement of Biden is having a desirable effect. It has predictably raised the ire of President Trump who claimed he hardly knew her and that she could have "Sleepy Joe". It has also put Arizona Republican Senator Martha McSally on the defensive. McSally told FOX News Radio host Guy Benson today that "no one should be attacking Cindy McCain" for exercising her right to vote. Needless to say, Trump will not be paying heed to McSally as she trails Mark Kelly in her Senate race.
Naturally McCain's endorsement those who move those who attend Trump rallies not wearing masks. Indeed, they have long despised the late Senator McCain and her endorsement of Biden will only reinforce their love for Trump. But her endorsement can have an effect on suburban women voters who traditionally vote Republican such as the ones McSally is losing in Arizona.
It remains to be seen how public Cindy McCain will be with regard to her support for Biden during the rest of the campaign. But if she is then Trump will turn his attention to her and the late Senator McCain. If he does then it will do Trump more harm than good.
