Forty-eight hours after Liz Cheney announced she would support Kamala Harris' White House bid, her father former Vice-President Dick Cheney followed suit.
The younger Cheney broke the news when she was asked point blank about her father's intentions at the Texas Tribune Festival on Friday. Cheney said matter-of-factly, “Dick Cheney will be voting for Kamala Harris," to thundering applause.
Cheney confirmed his daughter's declaration a short time after when he issued the following statement:
In our nation’s 248-year history, there has never been an individual who is a greater threat to our republic than Donald Trump. He tried to steal the last election using lies and violence to keep himself in power after the voters had rejected him. He can never be trusted with power again.
As citizens, we each have a duty to put country above partisanship to defend our Constitution. That is why I will be casting my vote for Vice President Kamala Harris.
In some respects, the former VP's decision is not a surprise. After all, he pretty much said the same thing when he cut an ad for his daughter's unsuccessful bid to retain her seat in Congress during the 2022 mid-terms. Yet it's one thing to support your daughter's bid for office, it is another for a former Republican Vice-President to support a Democrat running for President.
But now that Cheney has endorsed Harris one must ask what excuse Republicans have to keep supporting Trump? One can also ask what excuse Republicans have to stay silent?
Will we hear from former President George W. Bush? Mitt Romney? Paul Ryan?
It remains to be seen, but the Cheneys have thrown down the gauntlet and Republicans won't be able to ignore the question if they too will support Kamala Harris.
