Loretta Lynn, the Coal Miner's Daughter turned the Queen of Country Music, passed away this morning at the age of 90.
Lynn would gradually inherit this crown following the death of her friend Patsy Cline and would become a mainstay of the Grand Ole Opry. Although there have been other female country singers who have come along - Dolly Parton, Tammy Wynette, Emmylou Harris, Tanya Tucker, her younger sister Crystal Gayle and Reba McEntire, Loretta Lynn kept performing and recording well into this century. Whether it was her duets with Conway Twitty during the 1970's or Jack White of The White Stripes producing her 2004 album Van Lear Rose, her voice always shone through.
As memory serves, I first became aware of Loretta Lynn through The Muppet Show. I remember her long dresses and how she managed to stay elegant in an inelegant world. Here she is singing her 1971 hit "Lookin' at Country". R.I.P.
