My Memories of the Astros vs. Phillies in The 1980 NLCS
Tomorrow night, the Houston Astros will host the Philadelphia Phillies to commence the 2022 World Series.
While this is the first time the Astros and Phillies have faced each other in the World Series, it is not the first time they have faced each other in the post-season.
Those of us of a certain age will know I am referring to the 1980 National League Championship Series. In less than a decade in the AL, the Astros have thrived playing in six consecutive American League Championship Series winning four of them along with a World Series title in 2017 (albeit under controversial circumstances). But for most of their history, the Astros were a NL team when they debuted 60 years ago as the Houston Colt 45's. Rechristened the Astros when they moved into the Astrodome in 1965, the Astros would reach the post-season for the first time in 1980 besting the Los Angeles Dodgers in a one game playoff.
Managed by Bill Virdon, they had added both Nolan Ryan and Joe Morgan as free agents joining an organization which already had Jose Cruz, Joe Niekro and Cesar Cedeno. They even had a Canadian, outfielder Terry Puhl from Melville, Saskatchewan. I would be remiss if I didn't mention J.R. Richard, a pitcher who threw every bit as hard as the Ryan Express. Sadly, Richard would be unable to compete in this NLCS as he had felled by a stroke shortly after the All-Star Game in July 1980 and would never again pitch in MLB.
The Astros faced a Phillies team which featured Pete Rose, Mike Schmidt, Steve Carlton and Tug McGraw and managed by Dallas Green. Whereas Virdon was low-key, Green was domineering and despised. But unlike his predecessor Danny Ozark who was unable to get the Phillies past the Big Red Machine in 1976 and the Dodgers in 1977 and 1978 before missing the post-season entirely in 1979, Green got his team to the World Series prevailing over the Astros in a spirited five game series. Four of the five games went into extra innings.
I was all of 8-years old when I watched this contest. 1980 was the year I became a baseball fan and was only beginning to understand the game. But I remember being excited by the back and forth nature of this contest. What I also remember is being very sick during the week of the 1980 NLCS. This wasn't a case of baseball fever. I was sick as I have ever been and I remember this series being the only thing that made me feel better even though the Astros would go on to lose the NLCS. I was rooting for the Astros because the Phillies had bested the Montreal Expos in the NL East.
In retrospect, the Phillies had been a longer suffering franchise than the Chicago Cubs. When they defeated the Kansas City Royals in six games, it was their first World Series title in their 97-year history. They have only won one other title since back in 2008.
So this time around I am rooting for the Phillies and I predict Philadelphia will upset the Astros in five games.

Marlins Name Schumaker New Manager
Last night the Miami Marlins named St. Louis Cardinals bench coach Skip Schumaker to be their new manager.
Schumaker, 42, will succeed Don Mattingly who parted ways with the Marlins after seven seasons at the helm. During Mattingly's tenure, the Marlins reached the post-season once during the COVID shortened 2020 season.
The Marlins picked Schumaker over perpetual bridesmaids Joe Espada and Matt Quatraro who are the bench coaches for the Houston Astros and Tampa Bay Rays, respectively. Former New York Mets manager and current New York Yankees third base coach Luis Rojas was also in the mix.
Schumaker played in MLB from 2005 through 2015 as an outfielder and second baseman primarily with the Cardinals where he earned World Series rings in 2006 and 2011. In 2018, Schumaker was hired by the San Diego Padres to be the team's first base coach. In 2020, following the hiring of Jayce Tingler as manager, Schumaker was given the title of associate manager. Schumaker rejoined the Cardinals organization prior to this season.
The Marlins decision to hire Schumaker has been well received earning praise from ace pitcher (and possible NL Cy Young Award winner) Sandy Alcantara and outfielder Jazz Chisholm. Still, the Marlins will have their work cut out for them. Then again a NL East team has represented the Senior Circuit in the World Series three out of the past four years. Could the Marlins be the next NL East team to make the World Series? If they do then baseball fans in Miami will skip for joy.

Astros Sweep Yankees to Win Back to Back AL Pennants; 4th AL Title Since 2017
The Houston Astros have swept the New York Yankees in the ALCS defeating the Bronx Bombers 6-5 in Game 4.
The Astros have won back to back AL pennants becoming the first AL team to do so since the Kansas City Royals pulled it off in 2014 and 2015. This is the Astros' fourth AL pennant since 2017.
This was the Yankees' best effort of the series taking an early 3-0 lead on singles by Giancarlo Stanton and Gleyber Torres in the first and an Anthony Rizzo double in the second. However, the Astros would tie the score in the third on a three-run HR by Jeremy Pena. Houston would take a 4-3 lead on a Yuli Gurriel single.
The Yankees would tie the game in the 4th on a single by Rizzo in the fourth and would take a 5-4 lead in the sixth on a HR by Harrison Bader. But singles by Yordan Alvarez and Alex Bregman would give the Astros the lead for good.
In what might prove to be the final at bat of his Yankee career, Aaron Judge grounded out to Gurriel at first to end the series. After eclipsing Roger Maris with 62 HR and very likely the AL MVP, Judge went 1 for 16 in the ALCS and was hearing boos from the Yankees faithless.
Meanwhile, rookie shortstop Jeremy Pena won ALCS MVP honors going 6 for 17 (.353) with 2 HR and 5 RBIs along with two doubles.
The Astros will host the Philadelphia Phillies for Game 1 of the 2022 World Series beginning Friday night. Given the Astros are undefeated in this post-season they will be heavy favorites. But I wouldn't sell the Phillies short. They are a feisty team. Or should I say Pheisty? Both teams will have four days off so this might be a more competitive World Series than you might think.

Why is Bibi Defending Trump? You Know The Man Who Said, "F*#k Him"
Tulsi Gabbard Likens Biden to Hitler
And this is something that is, you know, throughout history, we look at authoritarian leaders and dictators in other countries. I'm pretty sure they all believe they’re doing what’s best. Even Hitler thought he was doing what was best for Germany, right? For the German race. In his own mind, he found a way to justify the means to meet his end. So when we have people with that mindset, well, you know we’ve got to do whatever it takes because, as President Biden said in that speech in Philadelphia, that those who supported Trump, those who didn't vote for him are extremists and a threat to our democracy.
Of course, when President Biden spoke in Philadelphia last month, he said no such thing:
Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans represent an extremism that threatens the very foundations of our republic.
Now, I want to be very clear, very clear up front: Not every Republican, not even the majority of Republicans, are MAGA Republicans. Not every Republican embraces their extreme ideology.
Of course, Gabbard knows this full well. But, as with Trump, Bolduc and those who deny the results of the 2020 election, why would Gabbard let the truth get in the way of her argument? And while she's at it let's throw in Hitler for good measure. It's about the sort of thing I would expect of someone who at first denied that Syrian dictator Bashar Assad used chemical weapons against his own people and then after acknowledging his acts declined to call him a war criminal.
One would be inclined to dismiss Gabbard's demagoguery if not for the fact that defeated, former President Trump considered naming Gabbard his Secretary of State or his Ambassador to the UN. And now that she's campaigning for Trump's allies then who can say he won't entertain such thoughts again?
In which case, if Gabbard believes Biden is like Hitler then what does that make Trump?

Jews Believe in One G-d, Not in False Idols Like Trump
No President has done more for Israel than I have. Somewhat surprisingly, however, our wonderful Evangelicals are far more appreciative of this than the people of the Jewish faith, especially those living in the U.S. Those living in Israel, though, are a different story - Highest approval rating in the World, could easily be P.M.! U.S. Jews have to get their act together and appreciate what they have in Israel - Before it is too late!
Trump is angry at American Jews not because they are less appreciative of Israel than Evangelicals, but because American Jews are less appreciative of him. Well, Jews believe in only one G-d and do not worship false idols like Trump - gold statue and all. While there is a significant segment of Jews in this country who are anti-Israel most American Jews do support Israel and like it when our Presidents do the same. We just don't want strings attached.
Especially if that string comes attached with a stone from a defeated, former President is demanding my people to get its act together before it's too late. Considering his daughter Ivanka has converted to Judaism and has Jewish grandchildren he should know better. Trump might very well, but he just doesn't care.
While Israelis do appreciate his decision to move the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem and recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights, no one can easily become Prime Minister in Israel. This involves the cobbling of coalitions - an area where Trump has no appreciable skill. For Trump make a suggestion is a combination of his usual bravado and general ignorance about the minutia of Israeli politics. Moreover, Trump is just as quick to question Israeli loyalty to him as he did with Benjamin Netanyahu when Bibi congratulated Joe Biden on his election victory while not indulging Trump on his election conspiracy fantasies. For this transgression, Trump said of Netanyahu, "Fuck him!!!"
While Trump has a very low threshold for disloyalty from just about anyone, real or imagined, the fact that he saw fit to single out "U.S. Jews" collectively makes his statement anti-Semitic regardless of his familial relations and positive policies implemented with regard to the State of Israel while he was in the White House and the Biden Administration is correct in characterizing his remarks in this manner.

Britain's PM Has Become an Albatruss Around The Tories' Necks
When Liz Truss won Britain's Tory party leadership contest last month, I asked if Truss could gain the trust of U.K. voters:
The only other thing which could benefit Truss other than time is if she exceeds expectations. Of course, Johnson set the bar so low that Truss might be able to overcome it. However, one should not underestimate the Tories' tendency towards cruelty and scandal. When it comes to Liz Truss, the jury is out on her for the foreseeable future.
Well, in scarcely six weeks, the verdict is clear. Truss has succeeded in giving the Labour Party a 30 point lead in the polls and become an annoyance to King Charles III. For all the Tories propensity towards cruelty and scandal, I completely underestimated Truss' sheer incompetence.
The source of this incompetence was Truss' tax cut proposal for the wealthy without having a plan to pay for it. This set off a panic in the British markets causing the pound to nearly collapse resulting in a rise in mortgage payments. The Bank of England had to intervene to stabilize the market. Boris Johnson set a very low bar and yet somehow Truss has tripped over it thereby managing to make Johnson look good.
Yesterday, Truss reversed course on the policy and sacked her Chancellor of the Exchequer Kwasi Kwarteng after only 38 days on the job. That's just about four Scaramuccis. But given that this was the central plank in Truss' economic policy and she picked Kwarteng to implement it how long can she expect to stay at 10 Downing Street? Is she another Scaramucci away from joining Kwarteng on the unemployment line?
Technically, Truss won't be subject to a leadership review until next September. But the Tories could change those rules and try to force her resignation. After all, Truss has become an albatross around their necks. Or in this case an albatruss.

How Can Tim Ryan Think Biden is as "Poisonous" as Trump & McConnell?
Why I Cannot Take AOC and Ted Cruz's Denunciations of Anti-Semitism Seriously
When rapper Kanye West saw fit to make anti-Semitic remarks over the weekend on Twitter and Instagram (i.e. "I'm going death con 3 on JEWISH PEOPLE" and "You guys have toyed with me and tried to black ball anyone whoever opposes your agenda"), his remarks were taken to task by a great many people including New York Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez who tweeted, “There is absolutely no room in this country or world for antisemitism.”
Under normal circumstances I would be inclined to welcome such intervention. The problem here is that I have to consider the source. It was only this past May when AOC claimed that U.S. support for Israel is the reason we cannot get healthcare in this country. Let us not forget her effusive praise of former U.K. Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn, a vile anti-Semite. Let us also not forget AOC's successful efforts in March 2019 to water down a Congressional resolution which would have condemned her fellow Squad member Ilhan Omar's repeated anti-Semitic remarks.
It was on this last point that Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz saw fit to chime in when he tweeted, "So you'll be voting to censure The Squad."
This too might have been a welcome intervention except for the fact that nearly a year ago, it was Senator Cruz who saw fit to defend parents brandishing swastikas and chanting "Heil Hitler" at school board meetings opposing COVID measures during Merrick Garland's confirmation hearings as Attorney General. Sorry, Teddy Boy. If you want me to take your denunciations of anti-Semitism then don't stand with the swastika. In my experience, those who brandish swastikas and invoke Hitler do so with the intent to commit a crime against property or persons.
Both AOC and Ted Cruz have my contempt because they denounce anti-Semitism only when it is committed by someone who isn't in their political camp. To be a champion against anti-Semitism then one must denounce all anti-Semitism at all times. When it comes to denouncing anti-Semitism at all times, AOC and Ted Cruz cannot aspire to be contenders much less champions.

Robert Brown, R.I.P.
Actor Robert Brown, star of the ABC TV series Here Comes The Brides and probably best remembered for his 1967 Star Trek guest appearance as Lazarus in "The Alternative Factor", passed away on September 19th at the age of 95.
Brown worked primarily in television and appeared on TV shows such as Wagon Train, Bonanza, Perry Mason, Bewitched, Columbo, Mannix, Archie Bunker's Place, Fantasy Island and In The Heat of the Night. His appearance on Star Trek was done at the last minute when John Drew Barrymore was a no-show.
While Brown would star for two seasons on Here Comes The Brides with David Soul and Bobby Sherman, he also had the chance to star in Hawaii Five-O as Steve McGarrett. But only days before shooting began, executive producer Leonard Freeman abruptly replaced Brown with Jack Lord. It might have been the right decision as Hawaii Five-O stayed on the air for a dozen years. Still, one never knows what could have been.
I had the opportunity to watch a marathon of Here Comes The Brides on the Decades Network a few years back and thought Brown to be a charming leading man in a family show, but Westerns were falling out of fashion as the decade switched from the 1960's to the 1970's.
Aside from his appearance on In The Heat of The Night as a favor to his friend Carroll O'Connor, Brown had been done with acting for more than 35 years and lived a good long life. R.I.P.
