Today, Lisa Murkowski announced she would support Ketanji Brown Jackson's nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Murkowski won't be the only Republican to support KBJ as both Susan Collins and Mitt Romney will vote for her as well. However, Murkowski is the only one of the three who will have to face the voters this year. Collins was re-elected in 2020 while Romney isn't up for re-election until 2024.
Of course, Murkowski also has the distinction of being the only Republican Senator up for re-election this year who voted to impeach defeated, former President Donald Trump for his role in the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol.
Needless to say, Trump endorsed Murkowski's primary opponent Kelly Tshibaka last June. Given the fact she voted both to impeach Trump and support KBJ, I would be very shocked if Murkowski prevailed in the Alaska GOP primary.
But this isn't unfamiliar territory for Murkowski. In 2010, she was bested by Tea Party candidate Joe Miller in the Alaska GOP Primary. However, Murkowski would run as a write in candidate and became only the second person ever elected to the Senate in that manner.
Could lightning strike twice?
