Actor Luke Perry, best known for his playing Dylan McKay on the 1990's hit TV show Beverly Hills, 90210 and who had been part of the cast of the current hit TV show Riverdale (based on the Archie comic strips), passed away today after suffering a massive stroke last week. He was only 52.
Beverly Hills, 90210 was appointment viewing in the dorm I called home during my freshman year at Carleton University in 1991-1992. Perry's brooding Dylan McKay was an early 1990's version of James Dean. In a role which could have been easily portrayed as caricature, Perry managed a well centered, low key character whose intensity bubbled at the surface. It is easy to understand why young women all over North America fawned over him.
Unlike Dean, Perry's star faded rather than burned away. He had no scandal to speak of and worked steadily on television and in voice over work before landing Riverdale in 2017. Although Perry managed to live into middle age, like Dean, he was taken from this world far too soon and far too abruptly. R.I.P.
