Australian voters have given Anthony Albanese's Labor government a second mandate increasing its seat total from the 2022 election from 77 seats to at least 83 seats with results from more than 20 constituencies to still to be determined.
Peter Dutton, leader of the opposition Liberal-National coalition, got the Pierre Poilievre treatment by losing the seat he held for 24 years. Unlike Poilievre, I don't think Dutton will get a chance to run for another seat.
As with the Canadian election earlier this week, the result is a rebuke of President Trump, his tariffs and the desire of Dutton's Liberal-National coalition to emulate Trump by pledging to cut the public service by 20%.
While nearly 10,000 miles separates Sydney from Washington, D.C., Australians felt Trump living next door to them just like Canadians, and judging by the result, even more so.
I am not without strong reservations about the Albanese government where it concerns their view of Israel as it when it rescinded recognition of Jerusalem as its capital and has shown lukewarm sympathy since Hamas' October 7th attacks.
However, song as the Liberal-National Coalition remains in lockstep with Trump, Australian voters are going to remain with Labor for the foreseeable future.
Given what has happened in Canada and now Australia, conservative parties should take note.
