Colorado Avalanche Deny Tampa Bay Lightning a 3rd Straight Stanley Cup

Last night, the Colorado Avalanche bested the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-1 in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup to win their first championship since 2001. In so doing, the Avalanche denied the Lightning a third straight Stanley Cup title.

It represents the Avalanche's third Stanley Cup in franchise history. The common denominator for all three championships is Joe Sakic whose roots with the team go back to its days when they were known as the Quebec Nordiques. Sakic led the team to its first two titles as a player in 1996 and 2001 and now serves as the team's general manager a role he has held since 2014. The Avalanche did have some lean years, but Sakic stayed steady and the team kept their faith in him and last night it paid off and with a young team it could pay off for many years to come.

Still, next year will mark 30 years since a Canadian team last won the Stanley Cup. I would like to see Stanley Cup come home next year. It has been in exile long enough.
