J.D. Vance, best known as the author of Hillbilly Elegy, has won the Ohio GOP Senate Primary this evening.
For most of the race, the 37-year old Vance had been languishing behind former Ohio State Treasurer Josh Mandel and businessman Mike Gibbons. But then on April 15th, Vance got the endorsement of former President Trump and this would surge him to the top of the polls in the final week of the campaign.
There was a time when Vance could be counted on as a Never Trump supporter who publicly described Trump as an idiot and also referred to him as "America's Hitler". But like many Republicans, Vance has seen fit to curry favor with the American Fuhrer calling him "the greatest President of my lifetime" and tonight it paid off for him.
Vance will face Democratic Congressman Tim Ryan in the Senate race in November. Ryan will be a formidable foe and even more so now that Roe v. Wade is on the chopping block. But Ohio has become increasingly conservative in recent years and, given where Vance was a month ago, it would be foolish to count him out of the race because there are probably a lot of Ohians who don't "really care what happens in Ukraine." Because if you think Vance is Trumpy now wait and see how Trumpy he becomes between now and November.
