Trump Didn't Impose Emergency Powers, But Was Plenty Demagogic in Oval Office Speech

President Trump did not invoke emergency powers to build The Wall, but engaged in plenty of demagoguery as the government shutdown of his making wears on. To wit:

Our southern border is a pipeline for vast quantities of illegal drugs, including meth, heroin, cocaine, and fentanyl. Every week, 300 of our citizens are killed by heroin alone, 90 percent of which floods across from our southern border. More Americans will die from drugs this year than were killed in the entire Vietnam War.

Most drugs are smuggled through land ports of entry. Americans who are killed by drugs are more likely succumb because of dependency on opioids found in our medicine cabinets, not via Mexican smugglers.

This situation could be solved in a 45-minute meeting. I have invited Congressional leadership to the White House tomorrow to get this done. Hopefully, we can rise above partisan politics in order to support national security.

The last time Trump had a 45-minute meeting with the Congressional leadership he said he would keep the government shut down for months, perhaps years. The time before that he promised a government shutdown and would be proud to do so.

America's heart broke the day after Christmas when a young police officer in California was savagely murdered in cold blood by an illegal alien, who just came across the border. The life of an American hero was stolen by someone who had no right to be in our country.

Day after day, precious lives are cut short by those who have violated our borders. In California, an Air Force veteran was raped, murdered, and beaten to death with a hammer by an illegal alien with a long criminal history. In Georgia, an illegal alien was recently charged with murder for killing, beheading, and dismembering his neighbor. In Maryland, MS-13 gang members who arrived in the United States as unaccompanied minors were arrested and charged last year after viciously stabbing and beating a 16-year-old girl.

Over the last several years, I've met with dozens of families whose loved ones were stolen by illegal immigration. I've held the hands of the weeping mothers and embraced the grief-stricken fathers. So sad. So terrible. I will never forget the pain in their eyes, the tremble in their voices, and the sadness gripping their souls.

How much more American blood must we shed before Congress does its job?

Once again, Trump is making illegal immigrants synonymous with rapists and murderers just as he did when he launched his presidential campaign in June 2015.  At the same time, what Trump said could have just as easily been said by President Obama where it concerns gun control.

A parent is equally grieved whether a child's life is taken by an illegal immigrant with a knife or by a native born American with a gun and neither a Wall nor universal background checks will put a stop to man's inhumanity to man.

With that said, a few words about Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer. My Dad thought only Pelosi should have replied. The moment I saw Chuck and Nancy stand awkwardly stand side by side I knew Dad was right. They didn't engage in demagoguery, but their presentation was not good and got attention for all the wrong reasons. Democrats would have been better served with one person giving the response. They would have been best served if that response was given by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

But it could have been worse. Trump could have used his time to tell the country he was going to override Congress and the Constitution and claim powers he nor any President should ever have. He didn't. But if this impasse continues don't be surprised if Trump renews such a threat. If he acts on it then demagoguery will soon be followed by dictatorship.
