13 Days Ago Trump Said Mattis Was "Retiring With Distinction"; Now Says He Was Fired Because He's "Not Too Good"

When President Trump announced on Twitter on December 20, 2018 that James Mattis would be leaving as Secretary of Defense he claimed he was "retiring with distinction".

That was 13 days ago. In the Trump universe, 13 days might as well be 13 years or 13,000.

In very short order, Mattis made it clear he was resigning due to a disagreement over policy in Syria and his behavior towards our allies. Trump then tweeted 48 hours later, “When President Obama ingloriously fired Jim Mattis, I gave him a second chance. Some thought I shouldn’t, I thought I should," as if he was a charity case. Trump's charity would end 24 hours later when he moved up his departure from February 28th to January 1st replacing him with Patrick Shanahan.

Today, Trump formally disavowed Mattis. During Shanahan's first cabinet meeting, Trump lambasted Mattis, “What’s he done for me? How had he done in Afghanistan? Not too good. As you know President Obama fired him, and essentially so did I.”

It is far better to go through life with Donald Trump as your enemy than as your friend.
