I'm OK With Nancy Pelosi Back in The Speaker's Chair...For Now

Twelve years to the day she was sworn in as Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi finds herself in familiar territory.

Twelve years ago I was aghast at Pelosi's ascendency. Today not so much.

It is important to remember that during Pelosi's first tenure as Speaker she foolishly met with Syrian dictator Bashar Assad in April 2007 despite objections from President Bush. She also infamously said with regard to Obamacare in 2010, "But we have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it." The latter remark would contribute to her party's defeat during the 2010 midterms. So I harbor no illusions.

But, for the moment, Pelosi is the only person in D.C. with the power to hold President Trump to account. The Republican Congress acted like Trump's servants, not the voter's. For all their Tea Party rhetoric, their profligate spending made Democrats look like beacons of fiscal responsibility by comparison.

Pelosi has also made it clear that she isn't going to take Trump's shit. She might very well make him eat it and tell him it's a tasty cheeseburger while Mike Pence tries to catch some much needed shuteye.

Trump isn't going to play nice. He never does. Pelosi will be ready for him. She will see to it that his Wall comes down crashing around him. As long as she can do that then I have no problem with her back in the Speaker's Chair.
