Singer, guitarist and actor Trini Lopez passed away yesterday due to complications from COVID-19. He was 83.
The Texas born musician came to prominence with the help of both Buddy Holly and Frank Sinatra who were both impressed with his work as a live attraction. Sinatra would sign Lopez to Reprise Records. Lopez carved a niche as a folk musician from a Latino perspective scoring two big hits in the 1960's with covers of Pete Seeger and Lee Hays' "If I Had a Hammer" and Will Holt's "Lemon Tree". He also occasionally acted most notably in the ensemble film The Dirty Dozen.
Shortly before his death, a documentary film about Lopez's life had been completed. It is a shame he won't be around to see it. COVID-19 has robbed us of so much. R.I.P.
