The St. Louis Cardinals' COVID troubles continue with outfielder Lane Thomas becoming the 10th player to have a positive test forcing more postponements.
The Cardinals have only played 5 games this abbreviated season and last played on July 29th against the Minnesota Twins in Minneapolis. The COVID outbreak began when the team traveled to Milwaukee and has cost the team to postpone series against the Milwaukee Brewers, Detroit Tigers, this past weekend's series against the Chicago Cubs and now three games against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The earliest the team could resume play would be on August 13th when they are scheduled to play a doubleheader against the Tigers in Detroit. In which case, the Cardinals would have 46 days to play their remaining 55 games putting the team at a significant disadvantage. Of course, this assumes no further setbacks. Cardinals manager Mike Shildt disclosed that several players have had to make ER visits due to COVID. To have the Cardinals play under these conditions makes a mockery of baseball.
In which case is the Cardinals' season over? If it is the case for the Cardinals then it must be the case for all teams. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred should pull the plug on this foolishness and should have done so long ago.
