New Zealand went 102 days without any new COVID-19 cases, but after a family of four in Auckland tested positive, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has put the country back on lockdown. Auckland has been placed under more stricter conditions than the rest of the country.
It is believed one of the members of the family might have contracted COVID-19 from imported refrigerated freight. It is not clear where the freight was imported from, but it is clear that the coronavirus can survive in cooler environments for an extended period of time.
Ardern will revisit the lockdown order on Friday. There were plans for Ardern to move to dissolve parliament and seek an election for September 19th, but these new cases might delay these plans.
I am impressed with New Zealand's no-nonsense approach to COVID-19. While I doubt it could be implemented in the United States, it is a response well worth emulating as closely as possible especially if they are able to overcome this setback. Going a day without a COVID case in the United States would be a remarkable feat never mind 102 days.
