Most prominent among them are 9 time NL All-Star catcher Yadier Molina and All-Star shortstop Paul DeJong. The remaining players are rookies including pitchers Junior Fernandez and Kodi Whitley along with infielders Rangel Ravelo and Edmundo Sosa.
Molina, 38, is in his 17th season with the Cardinals. In addition to his 9 NL All-Star selections, Molina is also a 9 time Gold Glove winner, a 4 time Platinum Glove winner and earned two World Series rings in 2006 and in 2011. He needs 33 hits to reach 2,000 for his career. Molina is a free agent at the end of this season. At this point, Molina is asymptomatic.
DeJong, who turned 27 on August 2nd, is in his fourth season with the Redbirds. He hit a career high 30 home runs in 2019 earning his first NL All-Star selection. DeJong is signed with the Cardinals through 2023 with team options for 2024 and 2025.
Both Molina and DeJong issued statements indicating they had adhered to league protocols on COVID-19. This is noteworthy as there has been speculation that team members had been to a casino. It is entirely possible that Molina and DeJong have adhered to league policy while their teammates did not and infected them. Whatever the case it has complicated the mess of a year 2020 has been in MLB and beyond.
