Joe Biden has picked California Senator Kamala Harris to be his running mate on the Democratic Party ticket.
Harris has been at or near the top of his VP list from the get go. So his pick isn't a surprise.
Nevertheless I think he could have made a better pick. I still believe Keisha Lance Bottoms, Val Demings or Tammy Duckworth would have been better choices.
On the other hand, he could have done worse and chosen either Susan Rice or Elizabeth Warren.
Still, I've had reservations about Harris since March:
Harris, too, endorsed Biden fairly quickly. This would be the same Harris who questioned his commitment to civil rights last summer tying him to segregationists. If Biden picks Harris then Trump will reopen that wound and pick it despite his own questionable commitment to civil rights. If Harris cannot handle Tulsi Gabbard in a debate then how will she fare any better against Mike Pence?
These questions still remain. President Trump and company are going to spend the rest of this week playing the clip of Harris questioning Biden's commitment to civil rights and put them on the defensive. In which case, Harris is going to have to explain herself and if she fails to do then Biden will have made a self-inflicted wound in choosing the California Senator. As for the VP debate, I don't think the Biden camp should be overconfident about Harris' chances against Mike Pence even if he is a quisling.
With that being said, more than 5 million Americans have COVID-19 which has cost more than 160,000 lives. So there will probably be a lot of people who will brush aside Harris' ambush from year ago and overlook a possible subpar debate performance against Pence. The Trump presidency had resulted in deadly consequences much of which could have been prevented.
As for me, let me sleep on the Biden-Harris ticket. I may like it better tomorrow.
