The Cleveland Indians have sent pitcher Zach Plesac home after they learned he violated the team and MLB's COVID-19 protocols when he left the team hotel in Chicago to gather with friends following his start on Saturday.
In order for Plesac to rejoin the team, he must have two consecutive negative COVID-19 tests. Yet I think it would send a bad message if the 25-year old hurler were permitted to rejoin the team considering what COVID-19 has done to the Miami Marlins and the St. Louis Cardinals. Either the Indians or MLB ought to suspend him for the balance of the season. The only other appropriate punishment would be to demote him to the minor leagues or give him his outright release. While Plesac has apologized for his conduct, I think this is insufficient under the circumstances. COVID-19 is a matter of life and death and should be treated as such.
Plesac, the nephew of former MLB pitcher and MLB Network personality Dan Plesac, made his big league debut with the Indians in 2019 going 8-6 with a 3.81 ERA in 21 starts. In three starts with the Tribe this season, Plesac is 1-1 with a 1.29 ERA.
