In an interview a few days with fellow Hamas apologist Mehdi Hasan, NYC mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani questioned the legitimacy of the Anti-Defamation League stating, “I think there are far better representations of the concerns of Jewish New Yorkers than the ADL and Jonathan Greenblatt.”
Whether the ADL represents the interests of the Jewish community is up to Jews and no one else. Mamdani has no standing to weigh in such matters, certainly not as a government official.
Of course, the reason Mamdani is doing so is to delegitimize, disrupt and dismantle Jewish organizations out of civil society.
To be sure, I was quite perturbed with ADL President Jonathan Greenblatt tried to curry favor with Elon Musk. But I have standing to be perturbed. AOC does not and she, like Mamdani, wishes to delegitimize, disrupt and dismantle Jewish organizations out of civil society.
Naturally, I remain worried that the city with the largest Jewish population in the world will see fit to elect a pro-Hamas, anti-Semite as mayor despite the fact that incumbent Eric Adams has now dropped out of the race. It is very probably too little, late for Andrew Cuomo.
If Mamdani does get elected mayor, he will be emboldened to further attack the ADL and other Jewish organizations and create an environment which will invariably lead to violent anti-Semitic pogroms. For me, this is personal as my Dad lives in New York City.
When I attended the march against anti-Semitism across the Brooklyn Bridge in January 2020, I made the case that if Jews are not safe in New York, then we are not safe anywhere. In just over 5 weeks, New Yorkers (including many Jews) might decide to put the lives of Jews in peril and elect Mamdani. He would be every bit as destructive to New York City as President Trump is to America.
