In putting pressure on ABC to remove Jimmy Kimmel from the air following his comments on the Charlie Kirk assassination on Monday, FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr claimed, "The FCC could make a strong argument that this is sort of an intentional effort to mislead the American people about a very core fundamental fact, a very important matter."
Yet, at the same time, here we have Candace Owens' insinuations that Israel was somehow involved in Kirk's assassination. If this isn't an intentional effort to mislead the American people about a very core fundamental fact and a very important matter, then nothing is.
I don't see anyone in the Trump White House clamoring for Owens to be expunged from polite society. Insinuating the killer might have been MAGA is out of bounds and warrants threats to pull a broadcast license, but entertaining anti-Semitic conspiracy theories is just fine and dandy.
Yes, I am aware that Owens isn't on broadcast TV and isn't covered by the FCC. But none of that matters. If anyone says anything the Trump Administration doesn't like, they will find a way to shake them down. The fact that the Trump Administration isn't doing anything to dissuade the dissemination of anti-Semitic hatred is quite telling. What this tells me is that the Trump Administration not only tolerates anti-Semitic behavior but is prepared to let it ferment.
