Well, quel surprise. Elon Musk has turned his attention back towards the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) claiming, "The ADL hates Christians, therefore it is a hate group."
Truth be told, Musk isn't referring to Christians per se, but rather to the late Charlie Kirk's group Turning Point USA. The ADL merely highlighted their past ties to far right, anti-Semitic groups. Unfortunately, the ADL bent the knee.
Musk has been maligning the ADL for quite some time in his campaign to legitimize anti-Semitic discourse. The ADL has tried to appease Musk by praising his leadership on anti-Semitism and claiming he didn't "heil Hitler" during Trump's second inauguration. No amount of appeasement or placation will work with Musk. To quote Taylor Swift, "Haters gonna hate."
Mind you, the ADL also gets grief from the far left in the form of AOC and more recently from NYC mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani.
In order for civil society to properly function, civic groups must be free to function free from intimidation from demagogues on both the Left and the Right. In the case of the ADL, demagogues on the Left and on the Right are seeking to expel Jewish groups from American civil society.
Unless the ADL and other Jewish groups put their foot down and refuse to be intimidated then the Musks and Mamdanis of the world will continue to legitimize anti-Semitism as an acceptable form of public discourse until organizations like the ADL cease to exist.
