With today being President's Day, I cannot help but think of the choice facing us in November.
Whether Jon Stewart likes it or not, we will either choose to re-elect President Joe Biden or we will choose to give defeated, former President Donald Trump another chance.
Then there are Never Trumpers like Bill Kristol who think Biden should not run and Special Counsel Robert Hur characterizing Biden as "a well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory" has done nothing to discourage him.
For me, the choice is clear, unambiguous and not a tough call.
I want four more years of President Biden regardless of how old he is.
If the Bill Kristol's of the world are so concerned about President Biden's age, then how come he nor anyone else proposes an amendment to Article II, Section I of the U.S. Constitution proscribing an age limit on presidential eligibility? It's because he and others are not serious. Nor are Trump supporters who wish that Trump be a dictator, never mind serve another four years.
When it comes right down to it, President Biden is a moral person and defeated, former President Trump is an immoral person.
President Biden governs for all while defeated, former President Trump spews grievances (real and imagined) against the many.
Even Kristol and others who think Biden should not run again acknowledge he has governed well be it through the American Rescue Plan which provided COVID relief including vaccine distribution, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act which is the most significant upgrade in infrastructure in a half century, the Inflation Reduction Act which has enabled Medicare to negotiate drug prices with pharmaceutical companies, the CHIPS Act which enables American companies to become competitive with China on the manufacture and production of semiconductors, forgiveness of billion dollars in student loans and the passage of the first gun safety legislation in nearly 30 years. Oh yeah, the unemployment rate has been under 4% for nearly two years as inflation falls.
And lest I forget, Biden has rebuilt the NATO alliance in support of Ukraine against Russian aggression and has stood with Israel in a way no other President has in the wake of Hamas' attack against Israeli civilians last October 7th.
Of course, there will be those who complain about the U.S.-Mexico border. Well, President Biden was prepared to compromise with Republicans and agreed to new legislation. That is until Trump said jump and Republicans asked, "How high?" So, I don't ever want to hear Republicans complain about the border.
Life in the United States is not perfect, and it never will be. But it is pretty good. Since we have it good then why would we want to return someone to power who presided over the deaths of over 400,000 Americans due to COVID, attempted to prevent the peaceful transfer of power while openly seeking retribution and dictatorial powers? Defeated, former President Donald Trump wants to be Vladimir Putin. If he is to be an American Putin, then who are the American Navalnys who follow into imprisonment and death for daring to disagree with Trump?
In the grand scheme of things if President Biden's accomplishments during his first term don't warrant a second term, then no President deserves a second term in office.
If we do give President Biden another term in office, he will leave that office on January 20, 2029 no ifs, ands or buts. The same cannot be said for defeated, former President Trump.
The choice is ours. For now.
