Today ought to have been a triumphant day in Kansas City as the Super Bowl champions were being honored in a parade.
Instead, there was tragedy as shots rang out resulting in the death of one woman while 22 others were injured including 9 children. The woman killed was a local DJ named Lisa Lopez-Galvan. It could have been worse if not for several Chiefs fans tackling one of the suspects.
Three suspects are in custody. They have not been identified nor has a motive for their actions been brought to light. Not knowing naturally raises questions. Were these people terrorists? Were they just criminals who just wanted to kill everyone in sight or did they target the victim?
Whatever the circumstances which led to today's tragic events, I cannot help but wonder if this will affect how Kansas City and other cities organize victory parades when their teams win championships.
During my first stint in Boston, I went to three World Series parades, a Stanley Cup parade, and a Super Bowl rally. Of course, amid all this there was the terrorist attack at the 2013 Boston Marathon. That event is locked down tighter than Fort Knox.
One thing I can be sure of is that no legislative action will be taken to prevent gun violence. If Congress couldn't be moved to act when 20 children were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut in 2012 or when 19 children were killed at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas a decade later, then 9 wounded children won't make a ripple.
