Defeated, former President Donald Trump will face four charges for his role in the January 6th insurrection to prevent the peaceful transfer of power.
Special Counsel Jack Smith will charge him with conspiracy to defraud the United States; conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding; obstruction of and attempt to obstruct an official proceeding; and conspiracy against rights. It is worth noting back in December 2022, the January 6th Committee recommended Trump be charged with conspiracy to defraud the United States and obstruction of an official proceeding.
The J6 Committee also recommended Trump be charged with conspiracy to knowingly make a false statement and assisting, aiding or comforting an insurrection. Although Trump does not face these charges, Smith could amend the complaint with additional charges just as he did 5 days ago with the classified documents case. As it stands now, if convicted on all four charges, Trump could face up to 80 years in prison. Trump is due to be arraigned in Washington, D.C. on Thursday.
Of course, none of this will necessarily prevent Americans from electing him President in 15 months from now. A New York Times/Siena College poll has Trump tied with President Biden at 43% apiece. Mind you this is among registered rather than likely voters. I'm also more skeptical of national polls. If this is the breakdown in battleground states like Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Georgia, Arizona, Nevada and New Hampshire then I would be more concerned.
Nevertheless, the fact that Trump is polling so well despite his growing legal troubles tells me a critical mass of the electorate either doesn't believe the charges against him or, worse, just doesn't care.
After everything Trump has put us through, should we freely choose him again then we have only ourselves to blame.
