On Friday, outside a campaign stop in Londonderry, New Hampshire, Mike Pence was confronted by Trump supporters who called him "traitor".
Yet notwithstanding this fact and the fact that Trump supporters wanted to hang him after he wouldn't overturn the 2020 election results on January 6, 2021, Pence defended and praised Trump supporters after an attendee called out their propensity towards violence. Pence replied:
I reject your suggestion that passion has translated into the violence and vandalism. I know the people of this movement — whether they support me or not, [they] are the best people in this country.
Of course, Pence said this in part because he needs Trump supporters if he is going to win the GOP nomination. But therein lies the problem - they are Trump supporters. These people are committed to Donald Trump with every fiber of their being and see Pence every bit as much as an enemy as they do President Biden.
Which brings me the other part of the reason Pence called Trump supporters "the best people in the country". It is because Pence is a quisling who, in time, will support Trump once he is proclaimed the GOP nominee.
So, what of Pence's statement after Trump was indicted for his role in the January 6th attacks on the U.S. Capitol? Pence stated, "Anyone who puts himself over the Constitution should never be President of the United States".
If Pence wasn't running for President himself, do you honestly think he would have made that statement? It was what he needed to say after Trump's indictment because it is in his interest to do so. Yet much of Pence's criticism was directed at Trump's "crackpot lawyers" (i.e. Rudy Giuliani and Sidney Powell) as it was Trump himself. This means Pence is minimizing his criticism of Trump.
This and the fact that Pence is still trying to ingratiate himself with Trump supporters tells me it is only matter of time before Pence attempts to ingratiate himself with Trump once more. If Pence can call Trump supporters "the best people in the country" then Pence will eventually call Trump the best President the United States has ever had.
