The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have won back to back Grey Cups defeating the Hamilton Tiger Cats 33-25 in overtime much to the disappointment of Ticats fans as the game was held at Tim Horton's Field in Hamilton. Blue Bombers QB Zach Collaros was named the Grey Cup MVP for navigating a comeback after being down 22-13 late in the third quarter.
The Blue Bombers also prevailed over the Ticats in the last Grey Cup held in 2019 when they won 33-12. That victory ended a 29-year championship drought. There was no Grey Cup in 2020 as the CFL season was cancelled due to COVID-19. The Blue Bombers are also the first team to win back to back Grey Cups since the Montreal Alouettes did so in 2009 and 2010. Overall, this the Blue Bombers' 12th Grey Cup title.
This is only the fourth time the Grey Cup has gone into overtime. The first Grey Cup game to go into overtime happened 60 years ago when - you guessed it - the Blue Bombers bested the Tiger Cats. The two teams have met in the Grey Cup 11 times with Winnipeg prevailing in seven of the contests. Thus more than half of their championships have come at Hamilton's expense.
In all there have been 109 Grey Cup games played. Here is what I wrote about the 100th Grey Cup game between the Toronto Argonauts and the Calgary Stampeders back in 2012.
