New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has been on the hot seat for the past month over the underreporting of nursing home deaths due to COVID-19.
But Democrats were not moved to call for his resignation until accusations of sexual harassment began to emerge. In the space of less than a week, Cuomo has been on the receiving end of three allegations - two from former aides and one from a woman at a 2019 wedding party. Prior to the third allegation, New York Attorney General Letitia James had launched an independent inquiry which will be done by outside counsel.
Notwithstanding the independent inquiry, I wonder if Cuomo will be still be in office by the end of the week. I would hate to see a repeat of the Al Franken kerfuffle but I have a funny feeling we will.
Should this come to pass it would show that Democrats were willing to overlook the implementation of a policy which led to the deaths of 15,000 New Yorkers and not being forthcoming about it but drew the line in a sand on three serious, but ultimately unsubstantiated allegations by Democratic political operatives.
New Yorkers might ultimately be better served by another Governor. But the punishment ought to fit the crime. Let me put it another way. It is rather telling that MSNBC has devoted little or no attention to the nursing home scandal, but has discussed the sexual harassment allegations tonight at length. If Cuomo wasn't facing sexual harassment allegations would any Democrat have called upon him to step down for contributing to the deaths of 15,000 New York nursing home residents?
