Highly sought after catcher J.T. Realmuto finally has a new home. The Miami Marlins traded Realmuto to the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for three minor leaguers and international bonus slot.
After Bryce Harper and Manny Machado, Realmuto was the most sought after player this off-season. Aside from the Phillies, the Cincinnati Reds, Tampa Bay Rays, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets, New York Yankees, Houston Astros and Atlanta Braves all pursued Realmuto over the past few months.
I understand the excitement over Realmuto. He made his first All-Star appearance in 2018 as he hit .277 with 21 HR and 74 RBI in 125 games for the Marlins. Realmuto has steadily improved since his rookie season in 2014. He turns 28 in March and appears to have several outstanding seasons to come. But it's one thing to be successful under the radar in Miami, it's another to withstand the boo-birds of Philadelphia who are expecting to win a NL East title in 2019. A lot of people are excited about Realmuto, but I wonder if he's the real deal.
