Elizabeth Warren Issues Second Apology In a Week Over Native American Claims

For the second time in less than a week Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren has issued an apology over her dubious claims about her purported Native American heritage.

On February 1st, Warren apologized to the Cherokee Nation for undergoing a DNA test to prove Native American ancestry. She apologized again today after The Washington Post revealed last night a 1986 registration card to the Texas bar in which she identified herself in her own handwriting as Native American. As CNN's Chris Cillizza put it, "This was not some mix-up or misunderstanding or someone who worked for Warren making a mistake. This was Warren's doing."

Warren's Clintonesque explanation doesn't help matters either. In her apology, Warren stated, "I am sorry for furthering confusion on tribal sovereignty and tribal citizenship and harm that resulted." She should be sorry for much more than that. She should be sorry for misrepresenting herself and deceiving the public. This is the only issue. There is no confusion about tribal sovereignty or citizenship here.

Warren is widely expected to formally announce her entry into the 2020 presidential race in Lawrence, Massachusetts on Saturday. Assuming this is the case I wonder how her Democratic opponents will deal with this issue especially her Senate colleagues who are running against her - Kamala Harris, Kirsten Gillibrand, Cory Booker and, come Sunday, Amy Klobuchar - will respond. Will they let Warren hang herself? Or will one of them give her a nudge?
