A Few Thoughts on The Wanderers

Last night, I went to the Brattle Theatre in Cambridge to see The Wanderers. Released in the summer of 1979 and directed by Philip Kaufman, it was notable for its largely unknown cast featuring Ken Wahl (second from the left) in his acting debut.

I had only seen The Wanderers once before and that was 30 years ago, but the film left an impression on me. I remember it for being both ridiculous and sublime. The ridiculous being the "elbow-titting" scene and that sublime being when Ken Wahl sees people crying in the streets and he runs to a crowd of being outside a TV shop who have just learned that President Kennedy was assassinated.

It also left an impression because the movie was set in The Bronx in 1963. Although my Dad had left The Bronx by then The Bronx never left him. He had been in a street gang and it provided a glimpse of what his life was like.

Watching the film last night, I was reminded of Animal House for two reasons. Both films were set in the early 1960's and feature a similar soundtrack. Indeed, The Isley Brothers' "Shout" is featured in both films. And, of course, there is Karen Allen. Her presence is also interesting because she represents the transition from greaser rocker to beatnik folkie. When this film was released in 1979, 1963 might as well have been a different century. If one were to release a film in 2017 set in 2001, our appearance and fashion have only changed subtlety. What has changed between 2001 and 2017 is the technology and life after the 9/11 attacks.

The Wanderers features several character actors. There was Val Avery who had been in The Magnificent Seven and numerous TV shows like The Twilight Zone, The Untouchables, The Munsters, I Spy, The Fugitive and, of course, Columbo. There was Dolph Sweet who would later play the father on the 1980's NBC TV series Gimme a Break with Nell Carter. Olympia Dukakis had a small role as the mother of one of the gang members. Less than a decade later, she would win a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for Moonstruck. Fans of The Sopranos will recognize Toni Kalem who played Big Pussy's wife and later widow.

I completely did not recognize Alan Rosenberg with his shaved head aspiring to be a Fordham Baldy. He would later join the cast of L.A. Law and spent a term as President of the Screen Actors Guild. While I did not know Erland Van Lidth De Jeude's name off the top of my head (he played Terror, the leader of the Fordham Baldies), I recognized him from his role in Stir Crazy with Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor. Sadly, he died of heart failure in 1987 at the age of 34.

But most of the cast faded into obscurity - John Friedrich, Linda Manz, Jim Youngs, Michael Wright, Samm-Art Williams and so did Tony Gallios after the Porkys movies. To some degree the same could also be said of Ken Wahl. Aside from The Wanderers and Fort Apache, The Bronx, Wahl would find success in the late '80's, early '90's TV series Wiseguy. But Wahl has been out of the public eye for nearly a quarter century following a broken neck sustained after falling down some stairs. This led to problems with alcohol and drugs which complicated his ability to learn how to walk again and do things most people take for granted.

Don't get me wrong. Wahl has been happily married to Shane Barbi for the past 20 years and is active on Twitter where he highlights his concerns for our veterans and for animals. (He also appears to be a Trump supporter. Well, one can agree to disagree in this country). But there aren't any current pictures of him. I can understand that. I'm sure he isn't in very good physical condition and doesn't want people feeling sorry for him. He probably wants people to remember him when they saw him in Wiseguy and in The Wanderers. If I were in his shoes, I might very well do the same. When better days aren't ahead we focus on better days past. In a way that was what The Wanderers was all about.

How Can Chicago PD Say Attack By Black Teens on White Teen Shouting "F&*k White People" Wasn't Racially Motivated? UPDATE

I only saw a minute or so of the now infamous Facebook Live post of four black teens beating up a white teenager with special needs in Chicago. It was all I needed to see.

How is it that the Chicago PD have already concluded the attack wasn't racially motivated despite the fact the attackers chanted, "f&*k white people"?

For their part, Chicago PD say the victim was targeted because of his disability and no doubt this was a factor. But had the victim had been black teen with special needs and his white attackers shouted racial epithets do you think the Chicago PD would conclude the attack wasn't racially motivated? If they did heads would roll.

The truth of the matter is that racism isn't a one way street. As this video demonstrates, blacks are every bit as capable of violently expressing racism as whites or any other race. Unfortunately, there are black activists who claim blacks cannot be racist because of the so-called white power structure. This is designed to inculcate blacks from taking individual responsibility for their actions.

Of course, the Black Lives Matter movement and the white supremacists would like nothing more than a race war. Although racial tensions have been exacerbated by the Obama Administration and the candidacy of Donald Trump, most people (whatever their race) deplore what was recorded on Facebook Live last night. As long as this attitude prevails then it is possible to move forward. A slow forward movement perhaps but forward movement nevertheless.

UPDATE: Each of the assailants has been charged with a hate crime (in addition to numerous other felonies) although it is not clear if the hate in question is in reference to his disability or his race. It ought to be both.

Trump & The GOP's Disgraceful Embrace of Julian Assange

This morning President-Elect Trump tweeted the following:

Julian Assange said "a 14 year old could have hacked Podesta" - why was DNC so careless? Also said Russians did not give him the info!

Honestly, it is a rather unbecoming for an incoming President to take Assange's word at face value. But if he does then I have a bridge which crosses from Brooklyn into Manhattan that I'd like to sell him.

Because if we are take Assange at his word then we must remember the words he uttered at a London restaurant when he planned to leak the names of Afghans who had helped us against the Taliban and al-Qaeda, "So, if they get killed, they've got it coming to them. They deserve it."

Sarah Palin used to condemn Assange for words and deeds like that. Today, she apologized to Assange. So what's actually changed between then and now? I'm sure Assange fervently believes the Taliban and al-Qaeda should kill Afghans disloyal to it. The only thing that has changed is that Donald Trump becomes President in 16 days.

You know who once said that WikiLeaks was "disgraceful" and that Assange should be given "the death penalty or something".

Who else? Donald J. Trump.

All of which demonstrates that Trump will say anything. The only difference now is that when Trump says anything, Republicans will embrace as the gospel truth.

Perhaps in a few years from now, Assange will see fit to expose Trump's misdeeds. In which case, we can expect Trump to revert positions once again. We can also expect to see Republicans racing to see who can jump the highest.

The Writing Was On The Wall For Megyn Kelly The Moment Trump Was Elected

The 2016 election was as much about Donald Trump vs. Megyn Kelly as it was about Donald Trump vs. Hillary Clinton.

From the moment Kelly dared to question Trump about his treatment of women at the first GOP debate in August 2015, Trump supporters declared her public enemy number one.

Would Fox News Channel be the network of Megyn Kelly or would Fox News Channel be the network of Sean Hannity?

Remember Trump TV? Had Hillary won, Trump would have launched his own network and taken Hannity, O'Reilly, Tucker Carlson and at least 40% of The Five with him. But from the moment Trump won on the early morning of November 9th, Megyn Kelly's days at FNC were numbered. FNC now worships at the altar of Trump and there is no room for dissent of any sort.

Megyn Kelly is making her way to NBC proud as a peacock where she will host a daytime talk show, a Sunday night news program and participate in the network's political programming and other major events. Honestly, the loss is entirely FNC's. They are becoming unwatchable. Aside from Kelly, the only thing worth watching Special Report with Bret Baier and even they have begun to fetch pails for Trump. I believe they will soon be underwater all the while insisting they are bone dry.

Kelly's last appearance on FNC will be this Friday. All things must come to an end. But for Megyn Kelly, this is the start of something new. If nothing else, people will now have a reason to watch NBC news programming.

Trump's Tweets Show That House Republicans Have Horrible Political Instincts on Ethics

That House Republicans even entertained the thought gutting the Office of Congressional Ethics demonstrates their horrible political instincts and why Congress is held in about as high esteem as pond scum.

There may be some truth to the argument advanced by Jim Geraghty that isn't the end of the world, everything's fine and Members of Congress can be investigated through other bodies. Maybe so, but perception is nine tenths reality and when you're image is lower than pond scum even the appearance of lowering ethical standards will only deepen such perceptions.

While at lunch today with my co-workers, I learned about the House Republicans' about face after President-Elect Trump's two tweets criticizing them for making this move. This crowd generally isn't sympathetic to Trump but I could see they were pleasantly surprised by Trump's intervention.

However, this development worries Harvard University lecturer Yascha Mounk. While Mounk praises the about-face as "a good outcome", he remains concerned about the long-term implications.
Mounk notes that Trump didn't object to the move itself, but rather its timing. Read his two tweets in sequence:

With all that Congress has to work on, do they really have to make the weakening of the Independent Ethics Watchdog, as unfair as it may be, their number one act and priority. Focus on tax reform, healthcare and so many other things of far greater importance!

Trump is no more enthusiastic about the ethics watchdog as House Republicans are. Perhaps even less so. After all, this is a man who refused to release his tax returns and got away with it. Who can say that in six months from now that House Republicans will pull off the same move and perhaps Trump looks the other way?

Mounk is also concerned that when House Speaker Paul Ryan objected to the proposal, he was ignored. But when Trump tweets, House Republicans say "How high?"

I think Trump feels the same way about corruption as Groucho Marx's Rufus T. Firefly did in Duck Soup:

I will not stand for anything that's crooked or unfair. I'm strictly on the up-and-up, so everyone beware. If anyone's caught taking graft... and I don't get my share, we stand him up against the wall and...pop goes the weasel!

Welcome to Freedonia 2017!!!

Meanwhile, the Stupid Party will carry on being the Stupid Party. I suspect this won't be the last time House Republicans (and, for that matter, Senate Republicans) make this kind of mistake. If they do this often enough even Trump won't be able to save them. It might take awhile (say the 2022 mid-terms), but I think we will get a Democrat controlled Congress and then the fun will really begin.

Duck Soup 2017 or Make Freedonia Great Again

As I have done for many years, I spent New Year's Day at the Brattle Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts watching a day's worth of Marx Brothers movies.

The last of the films was Duck Soup. If you are familiar with the plot, the land of Freedonia is in crisis and only one man can save it. Rufus T. Firefly (as played by Groucho). Within days of taking office, Firefly gets Freedonia mired into war and descends the country into further chaos.
As Firefly sings during his inauguration, "The last man nearly ruined this place he didn't know what to do with it. If you think this country's bad off now, just wait till I get through with it!"

This sums up how I feel about the outgoing Obama Administration and the incoming Trump Administration. President Obama nearly ruined the country and shudder at the thought of what it will be when Trump is through with it.

As my roommate Christopher Kain put it, "Make Freedonia Great Again." Of course, Firefly's administration is far funnier than Trump will ever be. Things aren't going to be very funny for the next four to eight years and possibly beyond. It makes New Year's Day with the Marx Brothers all the more important and the all the more necessary.

William Christopher, R.I.P.

Actor William Christopher, best known for playing Father Mulcahy on M*A*S*H, passed away on the morning of December 31st of lung cancer. He was 84.

Prior to M*A*S*H, Christopher was best known for playing Private Lester Hummel, a recurring character in Gomer Pyle: U.S.M.C. He also appeared on shows like The Patty Duke Show, The Andy Griffith Show and Hogan's Heroes.

Christopher was not the original Father Mulcahy. That distinction belonged to George Morgan who only lasted the pilot episode. Christopher made his first appearance as Mulcahy in the series' third episode "Requiem for a Lightweight". That was the episode where Trapper John went into the boxing ring. It is worth noting that Christopher's death comes a year to the day of Wayne Rogers who played Trapper John in the show's first three seasons.

It would not be until the fifth season where Christopher would be elevated to a full cast member and he would remain with the show until its conclusion in 1983. He would reprise the role in the short-lived AfterMASH along with Harry Morgan and Jamie Farr who played Colonel Potter and Corporal (later Sergeant) Max Klinger, respectively.

Following the cancellation of AfterMASH, Christopher acted sporadically appearing in episodes of Murder, She Wrote, Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman & Mad About You. His last acting credit came in 2012 when he appeared on a few episodes of the NBC soap Days of Our Lives playing (what else?) a priest.

One of Christopher's adopted sons Ned was diagnosed with autism. In an 1989 People Magazine article, Christopher spoke about the struggles he and his wife Barbara had in raising an autistic child.

Here is a short video of William Christopher taken earlier in 2016 speaking of how important chaplains are in both the civilian and military health care systems.

Goodbye, Farewell & Amen, Padre. R.I.P.
