COVID-19 Stay at Home Orders Are Nothing Like Nazi Germany

Last month I charitably those protesting state stay at home orders as fucking idiots.

I subsequently gave the same honor to Stephen Moore, a man who is presently advising President Trump on how to reopen America's economy, when he likened the aforementioned protesters to the late civil rights icon Rosa Parks.

Let me now add three more individuals to the fucking idiot list all of whom reside in Idaho - former militia leader Ammon Bundy and Republican State Representatives Judy Boyle and Heather Scott.

Bundy, best known for his involvement in the 2016 occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Harney County, Oregon, invoked the Holocaust while addressing protesters in front of the Idaho State House in Boise last Saturday by claiming Jews were compliant in their own extermination:

You must ask yourself: Why did the Jewish people not – how did they get in that position? I’m not someone to be a judge of another people, but we must learn from history. Because they thought that putting their head down and trying to not be noticed was the better way. They thought that compliance would get them through it, and it was just a period of time that they might just pass through and end up better on the other end.

For her part, Representative Boyle chimed in on Facebook claiming that businesses which required customers to wear masks on their premises were “too similar to not allowing Jews to shop when they were ‘required’ to wear the yellow star!!!”

Not to be undone, Boyle's GOP colleague Heather Scott took at aim at Idaho's Republican Governor Brad Little on a podcast proclaiming, "They're already calling him 'Little Hitler'."

Where does one begin?

Well, if the Governor of Idaho was anything like Hitler - little or otherwise - then Representative Scott would lose her office, lose her ability to speak her mind and then lose her life. Needless to say Governor Little has done nothing of the sort nor would he.

Contrary to Representative Boyle's claims Governor Little and businesses in Idaho are requiring everyone to wear a mask. The Jews of Europe wore yellow stars because they were singled out. Masks and face covering serve to protect people from a deadly, infectious disease the likes that has not been seen in a century. Jews who were forced to wear yellow stars weren't being protected from disease they were considered a disease which had to be eliminated. Hitler himself referred to Jews as "dangerous bacillus" in Mein Kempf. Boyle's analogy has no basis in fact and is anti-Semitic defamation.

The same can be said of Bundy who likens measures which apply to all people to measures that singled out Jews from the rest of the population and decries the Jews for not fighting back. Of course, it's kind of difficult to resist in a country already occupied by the Nazis. Yet Bundy demands we learn from history, but is evidently unfamiliar with the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising and other Jewish resistance groups throughout Europe. Or perhaps he is and like most demagogues Bundy doesn't let the truth get in the way of the facts. Either way, Bundy is engaging in anti-Semitism.

The fact that these protesters feel comfortable using the Nazi slogan “Arbeit macht frei" ("Work shall set you free") which appeared over the entrance at Auschwitz should tell us the fact they are fucking idiots is the least of our problems. When elected officials and other prominent public figures give their blessing it only encourages further idiocy. When President Trump tells responsible leaders like Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer to make a deal with people carrying Nazi paraphernalia then we have mob rule. And when the mob in question has an affinity for Nazism (or at least an affinity for projecting their Nazi sympathies upon others) then there is an insatiable lust for blaming Jews, African-Americans, Latinos and other minorities for all the world's ills. When that lust isn't restrained it will invariably result in violence and with it the deaths of innocent people. As if COVID-19 killing more than 73,000 Americans and counting wasn't enough. God help us.
