With 25% tariffs against Canada and Mexico due to take effect tomorrow and the U.S. halt of military aid to Ukraine, it might be difficult to conceive how much more unsettling President Trump's address to a joint session of Congress tomorrow night could become.
But one thing comes to mind - Saddam Hussein's 1979 Ba'ath Party purge. The late Iraqi dictator accused numerous members of his Ba'ath Party of treason and had them arrested, removed and executed on the spot.
Given Trump's fondness for dictators and their ways, it would not shock me in the least if Trump were to be escorted into the House of Representatives by pardoned January 6ers including the Proud Boys. From there, Trump would accuse members of the Congress, the Supreme Court and the military of disloyalty and had them summarily removed from the House by his personal Tontons Macoute.
Not only would Trump centralize and consolidate political power, but it would also make people forget about tariffs and Ukraine. In so doing, it would make Trump both the undisputed ruler of the United States and the undisputed king of reality TV rendering meaningless whatever Democratic response was prepared by Michigan Senator Elissa Slotkin.
It would also mean that bets are off for the American people. If Trump could have members of Congress, the Supreme Court and the military arrested on live TV in front of the whole world, imagine what he could do to people with little or no standing in a MAGAfied America.
Even if this nightmare scenario does not come to pass tomorrow night, Trump could do something like this in his subsequent State of the Union addresses.
