The Trump Administration is trying to have it both ways where it concerns Hamas.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio would have us believe that President Trump has "lost his patience" with Hamas with Trump himself claiming he has given his "last warning" where it concerns the release of the hostages.
Yet at the same moment Trump Administration was giving Hamas a "last warning", it is engaging in direct negotiations with Hamas and did so behind Israel's back - a line the Biden Administration would never cross. And if it had, Trump and his minions would never have let President Biden hear the end of it.
Needless to say, Israel isn't happy about this development as U.S. negotiator Adam Boehler makes a point of saying the U.S. is "not an agent of Israel." What the hell is that supposed to mean?
Well, what can one expect of someone who thinks Hamas are "nice guys"?
What I fear is that Trump will give Hamas the same sort of legitimacy which he gave to the Taliban in Afghanistan during his first term in office. While the Biden Administration bears responsibility for the disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, it was Trump's legitimization of the Taliban over a democratically elected government in Kabul which set that tragedy in order.
As much as I believe his plans to develop Gaza are nothing more than a scheme to line his pockets, I cannot help but think he will proceed with this plan while leaving Hamas in charge. This would be a betrayal of Israel and of the hostages both dead and living who suffered at the hands of Hamas' cruelty. Well, when it comes to cruelty it would seem the Trump Administration and Hamas are birds of a feather.
