I would be remiss if I didn't comment on Canada's triumph over the United States at the inaugural 4 Nations Face-Off here in Boston two nights ago on account of my dual citizenship.
While I have never been a huge hockey fan, I know that hockey means more than life itself in Canada. It isn't to say there isn't a passion for hockey in some parts of this country. One of my work colleagues notes that Charlestown is famous for "hockey player and bank robbers."
Yet when the NHL was locked out during the 2004-2005 season, I remember watching a Blue Jays-White Sox game at Rogers Centre and in between innings highlights of the Men's Ice Hockey Championship Tournament was shown on the big screen. Would such a thing have happened in this country?
Although there has long been a strain of anti-Americanism within Canada, the fact that President Trump has repeatedly demanded Canada join the U.S. as the 51st state while denying its nationhood and history has lit a fire under Canadians from coast to coast to coast. This righteous anger was channeled into Team Canada, and it made Conor McDavid's game winning goal that much more satisfying as exemplified by this Canadian Press headline.
Canada trumps United States!!!
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau declared, "You can't take away our country - and you can't take away our game." In typical schoolboy reaction, Trump replied by calling Trudeau "a loser". This defeat at the hands of Canada will make him more determined to annex Canada. But the more determined Trump is to annex Canada, the more determined Canadians are to be true north strong and free.
