Soon There Will Be Pardons for January 6th Insurrectionists; Next Year There Could Be Monuments

I would be remiss if I didn't offer a few words on the 4th anniversary of the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol.

In a fortnight, Donald Trump will return to the White House and might very well pardon all those convicted for their role in attempting to prevent the peaceful transfer of power on his first day in office

But this will only be the beginning. The Trump Administration will also very likely initiate criminal proceedings against members of the January 6th Committee namely Liz Cheney whom President Biden bestowed the Presidential Citizens Medal along with co-chair Bennie Thompson, the Democratic Congressman from Mississippi. It would come as no surprise if Trump should rescind those honors.

What I wonder is what will happen one year from today when the 5th anniversary of the January 6th attacks is commemorated. I predict that Trump will establish monuments in honor of the insurrectionists (whom he calls patriots) through the U.S. National Park Service. I suspect such monuments will be erected on The Ellipse or possibly the U.S. Capitol itself.

Of course, such a monument would be an affront to the Capitol Police who were mercilessly assaulted by these so-called patriots. The U.S. Capitol Police were supposed to be honored with a plaque in the halls of Congress by an act of Congress. This plaque was supposed to have been erected by March 2023, but Republicans are in defiance of the law

Unfortunately, it would not shock me in the least that a monument to the insurrectionists will be erected in the spot which was set aside to honor U.S. Capitol Police. I also would not be shocked if this ceremony were to take place on January 6, 2026 - one year from today. Such an "honor" would be a nail in the coffin of American democracy as it tries to reach its 250th anniversary.
