Like many Americans, I am watching Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick lie in state at the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol. Sicknick, of course, was killed in the vicinity of the Rotunda by Trump supporters on January 6th.
While tonight's proceedings were attended by Sicknick's family and his colleagues, several political figures also paid their respects such as President Biden, First Lady Jill Biden, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy.
I must admit when I saw McCarthy pay his respects to Sicknick I felt disgust. If President Trump had refrained from his election conspiracies, conceded and retreated to Mar-a-Lago quietly, Officer Sicknick would still be among us. The day Officer Sicknick succumbed to his injuries, McCarthy and 146 other Republicans gave credence to President Trump's delusions by voting to overturn the election.
While McCarthy did state at the time that Trump bore responsibility for the events of January 6th, he would then shift the blame to the rest of us while opposing his impeachment before making his way down to Mar-a-Lago last week to worship at Trump's altar.
Officer Brian Sicknick died protecting Kevin McCarthy's life. All McCarthy has done since is to sully Sicknick's memory. He is not worthy to mourn Sicknick much less be in his presence.
