Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar took the words right out of my mouth when he said, “The Israeli hostages look like Holocaust survivors.”
Saar was referring to the three men released by Hamas today - Eli Sharabi, Ohad Ben Ami and Or Levy. Sharabi and Ben Ami had been kidnapped from Kibbutz Beeri while Levy was captured at the Nova Music Festival. All three men looked emaciated and pale.
To add insult to injury, Hamas forced the men to thank them at gunpoint for holding them hostage. While they are now free, it was a sickening spectacle to behold.
I wonder what would have happened had one of the hostages refused to speak. Would Hamas have killed them right then and there? Or would they have been taken back into captivity or turned over to the Palestinian mob?
Had they done so, Israel would unleash its wrath with the blessings of President Trump. Indeed such an act could give Trump the pretext to implement his Gaza scheme.
Mind you, I wouldn’t ask any hostage to defy Hamas after what they’ve endured. Yet such an act would harken back to when the Soviets released Natan Scharansky from captivity demanding he walk in a straight line. Scharansky instead zigged-zagged daring Soviet troops to shoot him in front of the whole world.
While I am glad Sharabi, Ben Ami and Levy are now free, Hamas has taken far too many liberties in using the hostages as propaganda pieces. For this, a price must be paid.
