Two Cheers for Sean Lennon

Tonight marks the 42nd anniversary of the assassination of John Lennon.

This year my thoughts are with his younger son, Sean Lennon. Earlier this week, Lennon took to Twitter to show FBI statistics demonstrating how Jews are more likely to be targeted for hate crimes than African-Americans and Muslims. He stated:
A surprising number of people don’t even know that more hate crimes are committed against Jews than any other minority group. Racism in all forms is abhorrent and must be condemned. I don’t know if Ye truly understands how dangerous and evil his words were.

For this, I give Sean Lennon two cheers.

The first cheer is for pointing out non-Jews point out that Jews face more acts of hate than any other group in this country and that it must be condemned as vigorously when wrongs are committed against other ethnic, racial or religious communities. The second cheer is for calling out Kanye West's anti-Semitism as dangerous and evil.

My only quibble with Lennon is that I think West is all too aware of the effect of his words. When one sees fit to pal around with Holocaust deniers then one has cast their lot with evil.

Nevertheless, Lennon's comments are welcome and I hope he will have more to say on the subject.
