Warnock Leading Loeffler; Ossoff-Perdue Possibly Headed For Recount - UPDATE

We are just past midnight on Wednesday and am watching the Senate runoff election results here in Georgia.

As of this writing, with 98% of the vote, Democratic challenger Raphael Warnock is leading Republican incumbent Kelly Loeffler by 35,000 votes while Democratic challenger Jon Ossoff is behind GOP incumbent David Perdue by less than 1,900 votes (1,888 votes). Ossoff and Perdue are effectively tied at 50-50 and chances are this race is headed for a recount. Warnock is leading Loeffler by 0.8% which is beyond the threshold for a recount although this won't necessarily stop Loeffler from demanding one.

I worry that we might end up with a split decision. In which case, the real winner would be Mitch McConnell as Republicans would retain control of the Senate and effectively clip the wings of the Biden Administration before it even takes office.

It is interesting to me that Ossoff has about 20,000 than his fellow Democrat Warnock. Is this because Perdue has a bigger standing in Georgia despite engaging in insider trading every bit as much as Loeffler? Or is being Jewish is a bigger bar to overcome than being African-American to be elected office in Georgia?

As with the presidential election, I will soon head to bed without knowing the winner. But, as in November, hopefully good things will come to those who wait.

UPDATE: Warnock is now being projected as the winner with Ossoff holding a lead of about 16,000 votes over Perdue. However, the margin is within 0.5% and Perdue could formally request a recount and I suspect he will.
