In Georgia, Keisha Lance Bottoms Becomes First African American Woman Elected Governor in U.S. History

While most voters in Georgia are focused on Jon Ossoff's re-election to the Senate given the perception of him as a Democratic presidential candidate, history has been made in its gubernatorial race with the election of former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms the state's next Governor. With just under 80% of the vote reporting, Bottoms has earned 54.5% of the vote versus 45.5% for Republican Rick Jackson.

This is absolutely remarkable and absolutely long overdue.

I have admired Bottoms from afar and during the brief time I lived in the city. Hell, I remember when I wanted Joe Biden to pick her as his running mate.

Of course, Stacy Abrams laid the groundwork for Bottoms' rise to the top this evening back in 2018 and in 2022. But Bottoms brings plenty to the table in her own right. Let us also keep in mind this is the first time Georgia voters have elected a Democratic Governor since 1998.

We are going to hear a lot more from Keisha Lance Bottoms for many years to come.
