The Only Good Thing To Come Out of The Kentucky Derby Debacle

For the first time in many years, I watched the Kentucky Derby and of all years to have watched the race.

Maximum Security led from wire to wire, but then came the objection. My Dad didn't see any violation on the part of the horse or the jockey Luis Saez and he was far from alone in this sentiment. But the review took so long that one had the feeling it was not going to be a happy ending and for the first time in the 145 year history of the Derby, the winner was disqualified on the track. Second place finisher Country House, a 65-1 long shot was declared the winner.

Going through my Twitter feed, I have not seen a single person defend the disqualification. Usually, in any given sports debacle, there's usually someone who will defend an unpopular decision. Not here.

The only good thing to come out of this debacle is that it has united the country, if temporarily. The country will now have a rooting interest for Maximum Security and Saez during the Preakness and Belmont Stakes. If Maximum Security wins both events he will become the most popular horse since Secretariat. Whatever today's result at Churchill Downs, Maximum Security will be viewed by the public as the true Triple Crown winner.
