Three weeks ago, I expressed some thoughts for New York Mets broadcaster and former pitcher Ron Darling after he announced he would be undergoing surgery to remove a mass in his chest. At the time, he hoped to be back in a month.
Unfortunately, this will not be the case as Darling, 58, today revealed he has thyroid cancer and will require further treatment. Darling says the cancer is treatable and that he should be back in the booth in a month's time. I hope this is true, but this is what he said a month ago. Naturally it makes me worry.
As much as I like Gary Cohn's baritone and Keith Hernandez's curmudgeonly manner, the Mets games aren't the same without Darling's low-key cerebral insight. Hopefully mid-June will bring better news.
