Thoughts on The Mass Shooting at Brown University

A mass shooting took place on Saturday afternoon at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island which claimed the lives of 2 students with 9 others wounded. Eight of the nine wounded were also students.

The shooting took place in a classroom in campus engineering building where final exams were taking place.

As of this writing, the shooter is still at large.

On a personal note, I visited the Brown University campus when I traveled to Providence in August 2024. It is quite a beautiful campus. Under the circumstances, the beauty has been dimmed.

Living in such close proximity to both Harvard and Lesley, I cannot help but think of the possibility the assailant might not be done yet and might seek to attack another campus. Of course, Boston and the surrounding area have numerous institutions of higher learning. Aside from Harvard and Lesley, there is MIT, Boston University, Boston College, Northeastern, Tufts, UMass Boston, Berklee College of Music to name only a few. These are certainly vulnerable targets and no doubt these institutions are taking steps to upgrade their security measures in view of what happened at Brown.

Of course, there have been far too many mass shootings at colleges and universities (never mind elementary and secondary schools) in this country. The 2007 shooting at Virginia Tech remains the deadliest with 32 killed. But so long as the suspect remains at large there will remain an acute sense of fear throughout Rhode Island and dare I say, for the reasons stated above, New England at large.
