For a moment, it appeared that Mike Waltz would finally fall on his sword for the Signal Chat debacle in March when word came out that Waltz was being replaced as National Security Advisor on an interim basis by Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Instead, President Trump waltzed him right over to an ambassadorship at the UN.
So instead of leaking military plans, Waltz can now leak delicate diplomatic negotiations.
As the kids like to ask, what could go wrong?
Given that Waltz is still actively using Signal, what diplomat in their right mind is going have any kind of sensitive conversation with Waltz?
But this is a perfectly Trumpian move. Instead of throwing Waltz to the wolves, he gives him another job within the administration.
Don't be surprised if this becomes standard operating procedure when Trump officials who screw up badly. Screw things up at one department and get an opportunity to screw things up at another.
This doesn't exactly inspire confidence.
Then again neither does starting trade wars, threatening the sovereignty of our closest allies, embracing vaccine conspiracies or wrongfully deporting people.
It would help if the Senate voted against confirming Waltz. But I wouldn't count on it. This isn't merely a Republican controlled Senate, it is a Trump controlled Senate full of quislings.
